Daniel Meneley

(Deceased February 2018)

Experience

Dan died recently (February 2018) after a long battle with heart disease. He has made many valuable contributions to this website as well as to the documents and discussions our group has had.

He retired from Atomic Energy of Canada in 2001, and now holds the honorific title of Engineer Emeritus.  He serves as member and Past Chair of the External Advisory Panel to the Generation IV reactor program of Natural Resources Canada, in addition to other advisory committees and consultancies. He serves as Adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Energy Systems and Nuclear Science at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology.

He graduated with BE (Civil, Great Distinction), U. of Sask. 1958. PhD University of London 1963.  Physicist, Argonne National Lab 1963-72, doing research in fast reactor physics & safety.  Manager, Nuclear Studies & Safety Department, Ontario Hydro, 1972-80 and Nuclear Group Manager 1980-1984, during building of 12 CANDU power plants.  Professor of Nuclear Engineering, UNB 1984-91.  Chief Engineer, AECL 1991-99 during building of Wolsong 3-4, Qinshan 3 and Cernavoda 2 projects. Senior Advisor marketing & sales, 1999-2001.

Dr. Meneley was a Member of the International Atomic Energy Nuclear Safety Advisory Group from 1985 to 1988 and has served on several IAEA committees, most recently as Chair of the panel for Evaluation of IAEA Activities on Research Reactors in 2009.

Member International Nuclear Energy Academy (Chair 1998-00). Chair, Cdn. Defence Advisory Board, 1997-03, and now life member. Member, NRCan Ext. Advisory Panel, Gen IV (to present). Adjunct Professor, Faculty of Energy Systems & Nuclear Science, UOIT (to present). Member, Professional Engineers Ontario, Society of Sigma Xi, Member of the Canadian Society of Senior Engineers, Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering. Sixteen refereed journal publications. Over 100 other conference papers and reports, plus book chapter. Twelve postgraduate theses supervised.

Canadian Nuclear Society:  Member since 1979 (Charter).  Fellow since 1998. W.B. Lewis medal (CNA) 1990.  CNS Conference chair 1982.  Member, organizing committee and pro-tem council, 1979-80.  President , 2006-2007.

American Nuclear Society: Member since 1965, Fellow since 1988.  Program Committee, Reactor Physics Division, Executive Committee of Reactor Safety Division, Board of Directors.  Chaired several sessions at ANS meetings, chaired RPD benchmark problems committee.  Chair of Executive Committee, Environmental Sciences Division, to June 2009. Member, Board of Directors of ANS, from June 2010 to June 2013.
